IMPORTANT!
This academy requires AGENCY-PROVIDED ENGINES (type 3 and type 6). Please provide apparatus details below or note if you cannot provide your own apparatus and wish to be paired with a different agency.

Target Group
Engine module members involved in engine operations in the wildland fire environment as a part of their regular job, including engine personnel who need to acquire additional skills and knowledge related to engine operations at the Firefighter 1 (FFT1) trainee level.

Duties involve fieldwork requiring physical performance calling for above-average endurance and superior conditioning. These duties may include an occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Requirements include running, walking, climbing, jumping, twisting, bending, and lifting more than 50 pounds; the pace of work typically is set by the emergency situation.

Students must be fully qualified at the FFT2 level.

Academy Prerequisites
All applicants must submit...
1) IQS Master Record documenting FFT2 (or higher) qualification and significant wildfire experience;
2) Agency endorsement of apparatus familiarity and formal driver-operator training on Type 3 and/or Type 6 wildland engines;
3) Completed pre-course work following acceptance into academy.

Course Description
The purpose of this course is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to operate and maintain a wildland fire engine during presuppression, suppression, and post-fire operations.

Objectives
- Perform the correct vehicle and pump maintenance procedures on a wildland fire engine.
- Identify tasks to be considered by ENOPs during presuppression, suppression, and post-fire operations.
- Describe pump theory and demonstrate pump operation.
- Discuss the various tactical operations in which engines will be involved.
- Troubleshoot various mechanical problems encountered on engines.
- Conduct ongoing risk assessments to identify hazardous situations and identify corrective actions to mitigate risk.
- Identify equipment limitations and capabilities.

Students must provide their own approved personal protective equipment including hard hat, nomex shirt, pants, boots, gloves, eye and ear protection, and fireline packs including a new generation fire shelter.
